Proposing a manuscript

Central to the PFTCourses is that we collect publishable data, and we therefore encourage any former participant to propose and potentially lead papers.

We are currently developing a new system for proposing manuscripts based on PFTC data.  The goal of the system is to avoid too much overlap in manuscript topics, let fellow alumni know what other work is going on for various PFTC manuscripts (allowing potential code sharing), and to “reserve” manuscript subjects so that those who initially proposed a project won’t be “scooped” by someone accessing the data later on.

Proposing a manuscript:

If you have an idea for a manuscript, you should fill out a manuscript template in order to document your ideas and “reserve” those for yourself. An example file is available here. Note that it is important to fill this out as completely as possible, and it is especially important to identify and minimize potential conflicts or overlaps with pre-existing manuscripts. Be sure to read through other manuscript files to identify possible conflicts. Existing manuscripts take priority, but participants should be accommodating where possible.

Proposed manuscripts will be assessed by the PIs, and when they are approved the work can move forward.

Dead manuscripts:

Manuscripts which have not been worked on for 6 months or more (as recorded by Github or Google Docs changes) may be taken over by another author, as it is in everyone’s interest to progress. If you are leading a manuscript and see that you will not be able to progress within a reasonable timeframe, please inform the PIs and suggest a way forward. The PIs can also relegate to a new lead author, in communication with the main author(s). Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.

An overview of currently proposed manuscripts can be found here.
NOTE: Restricted access only to course Alumni. If you are a course Alumnus and don’t have access, please request it, or email Vigdis or dagmar.egelkraut@uib.no to help you get access.
